- How is the food?
There is always a wide variety of food available in the cafeteria, everything from strictly vegetarian cuisine, to good old comfort food like chicken nuggets, hot dogs, hamburgers and anything else imaginable.
- Is dorm life pleasant?
Yes, living in the dorms is a great way to meet people and develop great friendships that will indeed last you forever.
- How are the classes?
The classes are challenging, but the teachers are always available for extra help and are willing to work with you if you need it. Also, because of the nature of Stephens, the majority of your classes from the beginning are related to your major.
- Do I have to bring my own computer?
No, there are computer labs located in all of the residence halls around campus, with about 5-6 computers in each one. There are also two fully equipped computer labs located on campus, one for Mac machines and one for PC machines.
- Will my professors be more helpful and understanding because of the smaller class sizes?
Yes, it is generally very easy to get individual attention from your professors. They are for the most part all very willing to develop relationships with you, and they genuinely want you to succeed.
- Will I need a car?
No, there are a lot of things in Columbia within walking distance. There is a bus service that generally goes to all major areas. Or you can always have a friend with a car give you a ride.
- What is there to do on the weekends?
There is always an abundance of things to do on the weekends around Columbia. Everything from exploring downtown to watching live music, attending an “Indie Flick” at RagTag, dancing the night away at one of Columbia’s many dance clubs, even attending an event at Mizzou – sporting or otherwise.
- How do you keep from gaining the Freshman 15?
Make sure you eat well, avoid snacking in your room late at night, and make sure you exercise on a regular basis.
- Is the Stephens campus safe?
Yes, the campus is very well lit, and security is always available, 24/7. There are also security towers scattered around campus equipped with emergency buttons as well as phones, which connect you directly to campus security or 911.
- Is it easy to make friends?
Yes, the Stephens community is generally very friendly. You can’t be afraid to say hi and introduce yourself, though. Know that everyone is in the same boat, and everyone is looking for smiling, friendly faces to relate to.
- How important is Greek Life?
We have two sororities, Tri Sigma and Kappa Delta. They are a great way to make some great friends, as well as develop a new network of people. Greek Life does not dominate campus, however.
- Can I have guests stay with me?
Yes, you may have a maximum of three guests at any one time, and they can stay for a maximum of three days and two nights in a week. It is understood that sometime circumstances require longer guest stays. In that case, contact your RD (resident director) and follow the appropriate procedures.
