Women’s Studies

At Stephens, we celebrate and empower women from all walks of life.
Women’s Studies is an interdisciplinary program drawing upon the expertise of faculty and student-life professionals across the campus. This minor focuses on the expanding the knowledge about women, both in the United States and throughout the world, throughout history…or should we say “HERstory”.
Minor Requirements
A minor in Women’s Studies requires completion of at least 15 semester hours*, including at least 6 hours at the 300-level. Required courses include:
- WST 210: Introduction to Women’s Voices, Women’s Visions (3 hrs.)
- Plus 12 hours of WST courses; 6 hours of which must be at or above the 300 level.
*Courses used to meet the General Education Women-focused array may not be included in the 15 hours required for the Women’s Studies minor.
Program Structure
In Women’s Studies courses, students and faculty work together to illuminate women’s distinct experiences, perspectives and concerns, and explore the liberatory strategies women have employed and continue to employ throughout the world.
Women’s Studies coursework includes writing in multiple genres and are open to cross-genre work and experimental literature. The program aims for a broad range of voices and serves as a safe space for students and ideas.
Program History
More than 50 faculty members, representing all areas of academic life, have taught in the program since its beginning in the early 1970s when Stephens College first demonstrated national leadership in the field.
