Stephens Starts Academic Year with Inspiration from Katie Dillman ’09

Stephens College began the new academic year with purpose, energy, and inspiration at our annual Opening Convocation.
Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Leslie Willey, Student Government Association President Wylla McClurg, Faculty Chair Dr. Monica McMurry, and Dr. Kaneshya Lucas—2025 Distinguished Teacher Award recipient and Director of Career Services—officially welcomed students and faculty back to campus.
The highlight of the day was hearing from honored speaker Katie Dillman ’09 (Fashion), founder of Make Our Day, a nonprofit based in Thailand that provides transformative educational opportunities for children she lovingly calls her “munchkins.”
Katie shared her journey from Stephens through a fast-paced career in the fashion industry to a bold leap: a one-way ticket to Thailand to teach in public schools. That leap eventually led to the founding of Make Our Day, where she continues to change lives through creativity, compassion, and opportunity.
During her visit, Katie engaged the campus in meaningful ways:
- Convocation Address: She inspired the community with her story of courage, service, and impact.
- Student Challenge: She asked students to design businesses and jobs that could protect vulnerable populations from exploitation, encouraging creative problem-solving grounded in justice and empathy.
- President’s Home Dinner: She connected with students nominated by faculty for their ambition to “change the world for the better,” offering a unique chance for mentorship and exchange.
From Columbia to the fashion industry to Thailand, Katie Dillman’s journey is a powerful reminder of how Stephens graduates take bold steps to lead and serve.
As we launch into a new academic year, Stephens College celebrates not only where we’ve been—but also the futures our students are building, inspired by alumni who are already changing the world.
