A School on Campus
The Children’s School is integrated into the broader campus community, providing students with a variety of unique learning experiences.
Athletics plays a significant role in this partnership. Lab school students visit our gymnasium and participate in activities with Stephens athletic teams, fostering a sense of community and encouraging physical fitness. The college’s Equestrian Studies program also welcomes students to the Stephens Stables, introducing them to horsemanship and animal care.
Students love to engage with visiting artists, such as Diago, who took time out of his showcase at MU’s Afro-Cuban Legacies conference to teach CSSC students about multimedia still lifes.
We benefit from our illustrious Conservatory’s resources. Students dance in the historic Senior Hall studio alongside Conservatory trainees and attend theater productions on campus, exposing them to high-quality performing arts.
The college campus itself serves as an extended classroom for the lab school. Students use various locations for projects such as filming movies, studying trees, and participating in seasonal celebrations. These activities allow them to apply classroom learning to real-world settings and develop practical skills.
Our Education Department students further enhance the lab school experience through SLATE (Students Learning about Teacher Education) events. These include Fall Fest, Family Night Out, Science Night, and Art Night, which provide additional learning opportunities and strengthen the connection between the lab school and the college community.
Students in the preschool program benefit from integration into campus life as well. As part of their career exploration unit, they visit various college locations, including meeting the chef and cooking staff in the college cafeteria, interacting with staff at Susie’s (the campus store), observing operations in the mailroom, and learning about the role of librarians in the college library.
