Our Story

Pioneering Early Childhood Education
The Children’s School at Stephens College traces its roots to 1925, when Stephens College established one of the nation’s earliest college laboratory nursery schools. This initiative placed the institution in the company of educational pioneers like the University of Chicago and the University of Iowa.
From its inception, the school has pursued a dual mission: providing a nurturing environment for children’s growth and offering hands-on experience for college students in child development and education. This foundation has guided the development of both the preschool and elementary programs.

Early Years and Expansion
In the 1930s and 1940s, under the leadership of President James Madison Wood, Stephens College introduced innovative courses for women, including child study. This period saw the appointment of Dr. Marjorie Momyer as head of the Child Study Department in 1937. Dr. Momyer’s 30-year tenure marked a significant era of growth, with expanded faculty and course offerings that cemented the school’s reputation in early childhood education.
Evolution of the Elementary Program
The school’s focus expanded in 1972 with the addition of a multi-age elementary classroom. This development allowed for a comprehensive range of observation, participation, and student teaching experiences for Stephens College students, enhancing the institution’s teacher education programs.
The elementary program continues the open-classroom tradition of progressive lab schools, emphasizing hands-on learning, student-directed inquiry, and interdisciplinary studies. This approach fosters critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills, preparing students for the complex challenges of the modern world while honoring the school’s long-standing commitment to child-centered education.

Adapting to Changing Educational Landscapes
Throughout its history, The Children’s School has remained at the forefront of progressive education. The curriculum, enriched by the involvement of Stephens College students, creates a unique intergenerational learning community. This approach has fostered a supportive, inclusive environment where children from age three through elementary school can explore, learn, and grow.
The school has played a significant role in shaping early childhood and elementary education standards, participating in the development of accreditation criteria for young children’s programs. Its practices continue to evolve based on the latest research in child development and education.
Looking Ahead
As The Children’s School approaches its centennial, we remain committed to our dual mission of providing exceptional education for children and offering unparalleled learning experiences for future educators. The school stands as a testament to the enduring power of visionary education, where every child’s potential is recognized and nurtured, and where the educators of tomorrow are shaped by hands-on experience with the learners of today.
Throughout the years, The Children’s School has adapted to meet the changing needs of children and families while maintaining its core principles of child-centered learning and innovative educational practices. As it moves into its second century, the school continues to build on its rich legacy, preparing both young learners and future educators for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
