Campus Traditions

At Stephens College, traditions connect generations of students through shared moments that celebrate academic excellence, leadership, belonging, and joy. These rituals—some formal, some playful—mark important milestones and reflect the values that define the Stephens experience.
Campus Traditions

Crossing the Bridge

Crossing the bridges at the heart of campus is a symbolic tradition that marks both the beginning and completion of the Stephens journey.

Each fall, new students cross the bridges together for the first time, welcomed by cheers from fellow students, faculty, staff, and alumnae—an affirming moment that signals their official entry into the Stephens community.

In the spring, graduating students cross the bridges in the opposite direction during Commencement, symbolizing their transition from students to alumnae. Often gathered at the base of the bridge are Stephens graduates representing generations past, welcoming the newest members into a global network of more than 30,000+ alumnae.

Honors Convocation

Honors Convocation is one of the most cherished academic traditions at Stephens College. Held each spring, this formal ceremony brings the campus community together to recognize outstanding students, faculty, and alumnae for their achievements, leadership, and service.

During Honors Convocation, students are awarded scholarships, academic honors, and special recognitions that celebrate excellence across disciplines and areas of campus life. The event highlights Stephens’ commitment to integrity, scholarship, and personal growth—and serves as a meaningful moment of reflection as the academic year draws to a close.

Midnight Breakfast - Fall 2024

Late Night Breakfast

Hosted by the Student Programming Council, Midnight Breakfast is a favorite end‑of‑semester tradition designed to bring comfort, connection, and community during finals week.

Held late at night in Stamper Commons, the event invites students to take a well‑deserved break from studying to enjoy breakfast favorites served by Stephens faculty and staff. Laughter, encouragement, and conversations across roles make Midnight Breakfast a reminder that students are supported not just academically, but personally—right when they need it most.

The Ten Ideals

Inherent in the culture of Stephens College is the tradition of The Ten Ideals, first established in 1921. These ideals—passing on, respect for others, a love of democracy, honesty and integrity, a sense of beauty, leadership, independence, curiosity, individuality, and loyalty—serve as enduring guides for life at Stephens and beyond.

Each year, a secret group of ten students, known as The Ten, is selected by the previous year’s members. Each student represents one of the ideals through their actions, character, and leadership on campus. The identities of The Ten remain confidential throughout the year and are dramatically revealed.
